Tilapia is the most popular fish among Aquaponics farmers for several reasons the most

important being they are one of the hardiest fish on the planet. The 2nd most important reason is they taste great.

Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) is a freshwater fish with a high tolerance for brackish and colder

water. Adults are usually 15 to 18 inches in length and weigh 5 to 6 pounds. The largest recorded

specimen was more than 21 inches long and weighed more than 10 pounds. Blue Tilapia are

mouthbrooders, and broods range from 160 to 1600 eggs per female. Blues are the fastest growing

Tilapia in cold water, down to 60º F.

These resilient fish can withstand challenging water quality issues like low pH, low oxygen and

high ammonia and nitrite levels, which beginning Aquaponics farmers run into from time to time.

Tilapia have gotten a bad rap and are actually considered evasive species in some States in spite of the fact that they serve as a natural biological control for most aquatic plant problems like an

overgrowth of algae. Because they will eat algae, duckweed, water-meal and undesirable

submerged plants, they really don't compete with pond fish for food.

Nevertheless, we cannot ship to Utah, Hawaii, Illinois and portions of Florida without a State permit. So before you order Fish, you need to do some research to discover what your State's or County's Fish and Game Dept. regulations are in relation to Tilapia. It is up to you to know your

state's regulations because your Fish may be confiscated upon arrival in your State if you've

ordered the wrong species for your State.
